History of Rock, Paper, Scissors
The first time anybody mentions this game was in a book named “Wuzazu” written by the Chinese writer Xie Zhaozhi at the time of the Ming Dynasty.
In this book, the game was called shoushiling.
If you think it’s just that but no there’s a long history of this game.
In Japanese history, this game is also mentioned as “The three who are afraid of one another” (sansukumi-ken).
In the early 20th century rock, paper, and scissors spread beyond Asia, therefore, the names of the three-hand gesture were translated into English as what we know now.
Many Theories that say Paper wins against Rock
1. This story comes from an ancient Chinese tradition when a request was sent to the ruler on a piece of “paper”.
The rock was placed over the paper if the request was accepted or the paper was rapped over the rock, indicating the rejection of the request.
Because of all this many believed and said that paper wins over rock, paper covered the rock which means defeat in that situation.
Even though it is a popular story but it is not true because the origin of rock paper scissors happened in China but the today’s rock paper scissors originated in Japan.
2. The earliest Japanese “sansukumi-ken” game was known as “mushi-ken”, which was imported directly from China.
Although this game was imported from China the Japanese version differs in the animals represented. In adopting the game, the original Chinese characters for the poisonous centipede were apparently confused with the characters for the “slug”.
Today, the best-known “sansukumi-ken” is called “jan-ken”, which is a variation of the Chinese games introduced in the 17th century. “Jan-ken” uses the rock, paper, and scissors signs and is the game that the modern version of rock-paper-scissors derives from directly.
Its English-language name is therefore taken from a translation of the names of the three Japanese hand gestures for rock, paper, and scissors, elsewhere in Asia the open-palm gesture represents “cloth” rather than “paper”. The shape of the scissors is also adopted from the Japanese style.
In the Chinese origin of the game was Rock, Cloth, and Scissors, there was no mention of paper.
As the game grew over the world the hand gesture of the open hand became popular and turned into the current paper gesture.
It is yet to be confirmed where or when this change happened but it increased its popularity and we get this amazing childhood game.

3. This one is more of a simple and logical one rather than based on any ancient one. It makes sense that paper beats rock because even though we know that rock is physically strong, it can cover the rock that just hides its existence.
More simplified, we can’t find a rock or any object in a messy room where papers are just everywhere. Just because paper does not do any damage to the rock it still makes the rock invisible to the rest of the world, which makes it useless.
The remaining gestures are easy to understand, that rock wins over scissors because rock can break scissors same scissors wins over paper because it can cut the paper.
All these three gestures make a perfect game to play because all three are simple gesture and there is equal strength and weaknesses in each of the gesture.
