Craft Ideas: DIY Paper Heart Garland for Valentine’s Day

My kids and I absolutely love doing crafts together. It’s a fantastic way to spend quality time, unleash our creativity, and simply have a blast! This Valentine’s Day, I have a wonderful craft project for you – creating your very own paper strip heart garland. It’s a delightful way to bring the spirit of Valentine’s Day into your home or classroom. In this article, I’ll provide you with step-by-step instructions, accompanied by photos and even a video tutorial on making a paper heart chain.

Craft Tutorial: Heart Paper Chain

paper heart chain

This paper heart chain craft is perfect for creating vertical hanging decorations. You can even embellish them with a large heart at the end. Alternatively, you can hang the paper heart chains horizontally across doorways, giving your space a charming heart garland swag.

To make this craft even more environmentally friendly, I recommend making your own Valentine’s Day garland. By doing so, you can reduce packaging waste, utilize eco-friendly supplies, and create only what you need.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Stapler
  • Ribbon or string
  • Scissors
  • Construction paper (or other thick paper like scrapbook paper)
  • Hole punch
  • Markers
  • Ruler

How To Make a Paper Heart Chain

Start by cutting your construction paper into shorter strips. For example, if your construction paper is 9″ by 12″, you can measure and mark inch intervals along the long side of the page. This will give you 12 strips of paper, each measuring 9 inches. You can use a single color of paper or create a rainbow heart paper chain by using different colors.

You can hang the paper heart chains vertically or horizontally as a swag garland. First, I’ll provide directions for making vertically hanging paper heart chains. If you want to hang them horizontally, simply add more heart links to make the paper chain longer and omit the final larger heart decoration.

Vertical Paper Heart Garland Directions:

You can customize the length of your Valentine paper heart chain according to your preference. However, I recommend starting with approximately 10 paper strips per heart garland. Feel free to add a few extra or omit a couple to vary the sizes of your garlands.

Cut a few 18-inch lengths of ribbon to hang your heart garlands from the ceiling.

Now that you have your strips and ribbon ready, let’s begin creating the garland. Take the first strip of paper and shape it into an almost closed circle. Then, push both ends of the strip into the circle, overlapping them, and staple them together. Next, fold the bottom circular part to create a point for the bottom of the heart.

Paper Heart Chain Step 1

That was the trickiest part! Now, fold each paper strip in half and insert the bottom of the heart garland, then staple it together.

Step 2

Fold down the two ends of the strip to form the bottom of the heart garland again. Repeat this process of adding another strip to the bottom of the heart garland, stapling it, and creating another heart in the chain. Keep doing this for about 10 hearts. If you need visual guidance, refer to the video below for a demonstration of how to fold the hearts and create the paper chain links.

Step 3

Keep repeating this process until you have the desired number of hearts in your chain. For the final heart link, you can use a hole punch and a ribbon to attach a larger construction paper heart that your child has decorated with markers and a fun Valentine’s Day message. These homemade paper heart decorations are incredibly adorable, and you can personalize them with sweet messages and expressions of love.
