Earrings Made from Paper: An Affordable and Creative DIY Project

Whether you want to make seashell-shaped earrings or any other design of your choice, this project is both affordable and fun. Let’s dive in and get started!

Gather Your Supplies

Before we begin, make sure you have the following materials on hand:

Die-cutter
Cardstock
Template (download it here)
Mod Podge Matte
Mod Podge Silicone Mat
Liquid Gilding or Spray Paint
Mod Podge Hard Coat or another sealer
Earring hooks
Jump rings
Flat nose pliers
Paintbrush

Step 1: Design and Cut

First, draw a sketch of your desired earring design. You can create your own design or use the template provided. Once you have your design, transfer it to your die-cutter program. Cut out the shape using cardstock. For each earring, we recommend cutting around seven pieces, with each piece measuring approximately 2.5 inches in height. Feel free to adjust the size according to your preference.

Step 2: Double-Cut for Precision

For a precise cut, consider double-cutting your pieces, especially if they have intricate details. This extra step will ensure that your earrings turn out beautifully.

Step 3: Assemble the Layers

Using a foam brush or spouncer, apply Mod Podge to adhere the layers of your “shell” together. Start by adding the back layer and then gradually build up the layers, making sure to leave the front layer for last. If you’re using the Mod Podge Silicone Craft Mat, it will prevent your shell pieces from sticking to the surface.

Step 4: Remove Excess Glue

After applying the layers, wipe off any excess glue in the nooks and crannies of your shell piece. You can use a thin object like a sewing needle, pin, or safety pin to carefully remove the excess glue. This step ensures a clean and neat finish.

Step 5: Add Color and Seal

Now it’s time to paint your paper earrings! Get creative with metallic colors or any shades that suit your style. In this tutorial, we used liquid gilding to achieve a beautiful copper color. Apply a coat of Mod Podge Hard Coat or Mod Podge spray sealer to seal and strengthen the earrings once they’re painted.

Step 6: Create Pearl Links

To add an elegant touch to your paper earrings, create pearl links. Thread a pearl bead onto an eye pin, then cut off any excess wire. Loop the end of the wire to secure the bead on the eye pin. Repeat this step for as many pearl links as you desire.

Step 7: Attach the Pearl Links

Using jump rings, attach the pearl links to the circle on top of each shell earring. This will add movement and sophistication to your jewelry.

Step 8: Complete the Earrings

Finally, attach the pearl links to the earring hooks, and voila! Your stunning paper earrings are ready to wear or gift to someone special.
