Apples are one of the fruits of the fall season and are also symbolic of Rosh Hashanah. Instead of another apple cake recipe, I am delighted to share an individual dessert that is quick and relatively easy to make. With only five ingredients, you can whip up these baked apple pie rolls (or turnovers) and impress your guests and family.

In fact, I like to consider this recipe a Sukkot recipe since there is a tradition of having stuffed or filled foods during Sukkot. Filled foods symbolize the abundance of the harvest. While there are no dedicated dishes specifically for this holiday, each family prepares their own festive food according to their preferences. Usually, it includes challah, kugel, salads, some protein, and of course, desserts. The food during this holiday is special as we enjoy it outside of the house in the sukkah.

Is Rice Paper Gluten-Free?

These baked rolls are made with rice paper. I found colorful rice paper while shopping and thought it added a cute and festive touch to the dish. These rice papers are colored with natural food colors derived from brown rice, beets, and turmeric. The flavor is the same as the white ones, and the natural colors do not add any additional flavor. Therefore, regular white rice paper works just as well and is suitable for the recipe too. With rice paper as the turnover “dough,” the dish is gluten-free. However, if you don’t mind gluten, you can also make these rolls with phyllo sheets or puff pastry.

To make these apple pie rolls or turnovers, you will need rice paper, apples, cinnamon, sugar, and some vegetable oil. For garnish, I used pomegranate seeds, and I also drizzled the rolls with honey. If you switch the honey with maple syrup, the recipe will be vegan. Another garnish option is to sprinkle powdered sugar.

The process of making the rolls starts with cooking the apple pie filling briefly and letting it cool. Then, you dip the rice paper in water to make it soft and ready to be filled. Place the filling in a line and fold the sides of the paper over it before rolling. Repeat this for all the rolls you are making. Place them on a pan, brush with vegetable oil, and bake for 15-20 minutes. Garnish as desired and enjoy the crunchy bite.
