Fall has officially arrived!
What comes to mind when you think fall? For us, it’s pumpkin patches, falling leaves, and scarecrows.
If your kiddos love visiting the farms in the fall, they’ll love creating this paper bag scarecrow craft as well!
Recently, we’ve renewed our excitement about brown paper bag puppets. They’re a simple way to make a fun craft and end up with a new “toy”.
It’s a straightforward activity you can do with kids of all ages! Read on below or watch our video tutorial to see how to make one with your children.
Scarecrow Paper Bag Craft
We love this simple fall craft that’s great for preschool, kindergarten, and elementary children. You only need a few common craft supplies and our free printable scarecrow template to make this puppet.
Directions
Download the scarecrow template, print, and cut out the pieces.
Assemble the hat by gluing the straw hair to the sides of the hat.
Glue the completed hat to the top of the brown paper bag. In order to leave enough space for the face pieces, only glue about 1″ of the hat to the bag. The rest will hang off the top.
Glue the eyes just below the hat.
Place the triangle nose beneath and in between the eyes and glue in place.
Glue the cheeks beneath the eyes.
Using the black marker, draw the mouth from one cheek to the other cheek, just underneath the paper bag flap. Draw lines along the smile.
Take a piece of colored paper that you want to be the scarecrow’s shirt. Cut it to fit the bottom of the paper bag. Trim the top end to be rounded, like a collar. Glue this into place beneath the smile.
Glue the square patch to the middle of the shirt.
Use the black marker to draw hashed lines along the square to give it the appearance of being stitched.
You’re done!

Ways To Use This Puppet Craft
You can certainly use this scarecrow puppet any way you want, but if you’re at a loss on how to use it, we’ve got some suggestions!
One of the first ways we love to use this craft is to learn or review basic parts of the face. Since this scarecrow is so basic, it’s great for teaching this. Ask your child questions like:
- Where are the scarecrow’s eyes? Where are your eyes?
- What color is the scarecrow’s nose?
- What shape is his nose?
- Can you point to the scarecrow’s mouth?
If your children are older, we love using paper bag puppets for storytelling! Since it’s fall, ask them to tell a story about a scarecrow who lives in a pumpkin patch. Or have them tell you about their favorite fall traditions.
Any way your can get your child thinking and storytelling will help them grow and progress.
One last way we like to use kraft bag puppets is to work on fine motor skills. Have your child put on the puppet, then ask them to pick up different items with the scarecrow’s mouth. You can create a fun task by asking your child to transfer an item from one area to another (like from a bin to another bin).
This activity will help those little hand muscles develop and strengthen. We suggest beginning with large, easy to grasp items. If your child is easily able to complete the task, you can move on to smaller objects.
