Foundation Paper Piecing Patterns
Have you ever tried foundation paper piecing? It’s my favorite craft technique that I’ve discovered this year! If you’re looking for some free paper piecing patterns, I’ve got you covered. I’m particularly drawn to modern shapes and graphic animals, so you’ll find a mix of those in this collection.
Tutorials for Paper Piecing
Before you start sewing with one of these free foundation paper piecing patterns, it’s helpful to gather some resources. Here are a few tutorials that you might find useful:
- Polka Dot Chair has some general tips for foundation paper piecing.
- Sew Hooked provides a tutorial on how to enlarge and reduce a pattern.
- Blossom Heart Quilts offers a free pattern with a handy tutorial.
- Sew What Sherlock has a “lazy way” tutorial that includes tracing the pattern on both sides.
- Sandi at Piecemeal Quilts shows how to use freezer paper as a foundation.
Different tutorials may recommend different tools, but I personally love using a rotary cutter and quilting rulers. If you’re interested, you could also try using a Clover finger press for added convenience.

Lastly, I couldn’t resist mentioning a few paper piecing patterns for sale. These patterns caught my eye, and I’m having trouble deciding which one to buy for my next project. The options include a cow pattern, a butterfly pattern, a llama pattern, a unicorn pattern, a sewing machine pattern, a kestrel pattern, a little bear pattern, a gemology block pattern, and a variety of dinosaur patterns.
